If you’ve survived an acrylic or gel nightmare, you know the panic of getting a nail ripped off or developing an allergy to them.

I used to love my bi-weekly trips to the nail salon. Walking in with bare nails and leaving with a fresh Pinterest-inspired set was my favorite form of self-care. Then, in 2023, my worst nightmare happened.

It was 1:00 AM. I reached to flip the kitchen light switch, snagged my nail, and ripped off the entire acrylic… including my entire nail bed.

Unsurprisingly, I was traumatized and swore off acrylics forever. I can still feel the pain I felt when my nail was ripped off, and I vowed to myself to never put myself through that again.

So I made the switch to regular polish, but my natural nails were paper-thin, brittle, and beyond broken.

While scrolling Instagram and doing some holiday shopping, I stumbled upon the French brand The Manicurist. Their packaging and marketing caught my eye immediately. For Christmas that year, I got their Active Line.

These nail polishes are specifically formulated to help repair and care for your nails while covering up imperfections that regular polishes enhance.

They are vegan and made up of plant-based ingredients to nourish your nails!

When I first started trying these out, I used them weekly for a few months until my nails were noticeably looking healthy and strong. Now, I use them before I apply a set of temporary fake nails and when I want a gorgeous clean hit of color. These are especially my favorite in the fall and winter!

Here is my honest breakdown of why these are Libra Approved, and some tips and tricks I learned along the way that I think you should know before making your first purchase!

About The Manicurist

The Manicurist offers a wide variety of products, including both regular and gel nail polishes. Their formulas are completely plant-based, and the brand has become a well-recognized name in the nail care industry. Their marketing is top tier, but most importantly, their performance and results speak for themselves.

The Manicurist began as a clean nail care brand, using only safe and high-quality ingredients. They do not test their products on animals, and their formulas are gluten-free, vegan, and TPO-free. (TPO, or Triphenyl Phosphate, is a chemical sometimes used in nail polish that many clean beauty brands avoid due to potential health concerns). Even their glitters are biodegradable. Their commitment to their values and the earth is truly commendable.

The Manicurist is a female-founded brand. It was established in 1996 by Gaëlle Lebrat-Personnaz's mother, and in 2016, Gaëlle took over the business. She is committed to keeping the brand focused on self-care. Not only does The Manicurist offer impeccable products, but it also has a story that resonates with many women.

Many women share the common challenge of not having much time for self-care. They have often been disappointed by regular nail polishes or have experienced damage from previous nail treatments.

The Manicurist caters to women by providing a way to care for themselves without spending 1.5 hours in a nail salon or struggling with at-home polishes that take an hour to dry.

I found it fascinating to learn about the story behind the brand, and I absolutely loved discovering more about them.

How They Work

The Manicurist’s Active line is formulated to be more than just your average nail polish. Each polish is formulated with plant-based ingredients that help support and repair your nail health while giving a smooth, even, polished finishing look.

The Active Line focuses on strengthening, hydrating, and protecting your nails as you wear them. They include ingredients like castor fibers that help smooth and fill ridges. They use hexanal that works to restore fragile nails. AHAs that provide gentle hydration and vitamin E that helps prevent damage.

Each polish in the Active line has a specific “makeup effect.” For example, the Smooth polish acts like a color corrector cream, creating a soft, satin finish that helps blur imperfections and even out the nail surface.

The Glow polish delivers a glossy, mirror-like shine, while the Plump polish gives a volumizing effect for a fuller look. There are also options for brightening, highlighting, or achieving a soft matte blur, so you can choose whichever effect suits your style and desired results!

These polishes are designed to be applied right onto bare nails. They dry very quickly. I would recommend allowing each layer to completly dry before moving onto the next. If you don't, it may take longer to dry. I like to apply 2-3 coats to build up the color and then top it off with the active glow for a shiny finishing look. Although they say that you do not need a top coat, I have found that over the years, applying a top coat allows them to last significantly longer. I use the Essie spead setter top coat and love the results!

Over time, with regular use, you may notice your nails becoming visibly stronger and healthier, even when you’re not wearing polish.

In short, the Active line makes it easy to get a beautiful, salon-quality manicure at home, while also caring for your nails in the process!
